The immediate resignation of Rep. Don Haggar, R-Sioux Falls, from his seat in the state House of Representatives last week created several vacancies.
Rep. Kent Peterson, R-Salem, fills the opening on the Legislature’s task force on initiatives and referenda.
Rep. Steve Livermont, R-Martin, takes the seat Haggar held on the Legislature’s State-Tribal Relations Committee
No word yet on what the House will do regarding Haggar’s now-open post as speaker pro tem, the No. 2 presiding officer in the House and presumably the next speaker come 2019.
Lt. Gov. Matt Michels of Yankton was the last House speaker to serve two terms in a row (2003-2006, when Chris Madsen, R-Spearfish, moved to Sioux Falls mid-term in 2003-2004 as speaker pro tem and didn’t seek election again).
